How Does Zoysia Grass Work?

Zoysia grows differently than regular grasses. It’s growth is done by sending out “shoots” or “stolons” (as the industry calls them). These stolons spread creating a lush green carpet. This grass has very deep roots which help it survive in unfavourable conditions.
What you do is plant 1 foot apart (6” if you want it to spread faster) and after a couple of growing seasons, the grass with spread and cover the area with a beautiful green lawn. The grass does not grow tall, which reduces the amount of maintenance you’ll have to do.

One of the nice benefits of the Amazoy zoysia grass, is that once you plant it, you will not need to reseed or touch up like you do with other grasses.

So What Are the Benefits of Zoysia Grass?

Reduces the amount of watering significantly (you will need to water it once you have planted it so that the roots can take effect, after that, you’re good to go)

  • Reduces lawn maintenance (cuts mowing in half)
  • You’ll never need to replace it
  • Requires very little watering
  • Grows in difficult soil situations (sandy, salty, rocky, and in drought conditions)
  • You only need to plant it once!

Where is the Best Place to Buy Zoysia Grass?

By far, the best place to buy zoysia grasses with directly from a zoysia nursery. For example, the Amazoy grass is harvested daily and couriered out directly to the home owner. Talk about customer service! The best planting season would be the spring and the summer.
There are a number of zoysiagrass species. Joysia Japonica, zoysia materlla, zoysia tenuifolia, empire zoysia grass (or empire turf) and emerald zoyisgrass. The best on the market though, is Amazoy zoysia grass plugs.

Customer Feedback

Zoysia grass problems that people comment on are:

  1. They don’t like the brown color during the winter or dormant season.
  2. The grass spreads with shoots, which can grow into flower beds and the neighbor’s lawn (though they might appreciate a new, lush lawn).

On the positive side, there are those who love it because…

  1. They have a green grass
  2. Very low maintenance (no watering, reduces mowing, no pesticides required)
  3. It is drought resistant
  4. Replaces weeds and crabgrass
  5. Never needs replacing

Del Ray Beach, FL — Grandson loves the soft “carpet”

“We planted Amazoy plugs three years ago and we cannot believe how beautiful our new lawn is. The best part of it all is the color of the grass; the blue-green cast it gives off when you are looking at it. We love walking on it barefoot. Our grandson loves to just play outside when he comes to visit. He tells everyone, ‘Grammy and Poppy have a carpet outside for grass’.” –M.D.

Best Zoysia Grass Fertilizer

Do you need a zoysia grass fertilizer?

Although zoysia grass is very hearty and can grow in any soil conditions, it is recommended to add zoysia grass fertilizer to your newly planted plugs.

But not just any fertilizer! Ordinary fertilizers can damage and burn your zoysia grass, so it is best that you use a fertilizer that is specially made for zoysia grass.

The best on the market is Nutri-20. This is a water soluabable fertilizer that will help kick start the growth of your new plugs and not burn your grass.

Your zoysia lawn will be its most luxurious and healthy if it is fertilized once a year in late May or early June when the grass is actively growing.

Applying Zoysia Grass Fertilizer
Fertilizer should be applied with a hose-end sprayer, since this supplies necessary water as well as fertilizer. Always follow directions carefully when applying any fertilizer product to avoid problems associated with over feeding such as chemical burn. To apply water-soluble components, use a Hose-End Sprayer.

Best Zoysia Grass Plugs | Quality Plugs Guaranteed to Grow

Zoysia Grass Plugs

Zoysiagrass lawns are most successfully started with zoysia grass plugs (small chucks of sod). Zoysiagrass can also be started through seeding, but the varieties that are currently available don’t have the same quality in texture, growth, color and hardiness of the grass plugs.

The best time to place your plugs in your lawn is in the late spring and early summer.  Those who plant late in the summer (August), will find that there is not enough time for the zoysia grass to take hold and may not survive the winter.  So plant your plugs between late March through to the end of June.

Zoysia grass plugs are quite small, about 1 to 2 inches wide with 2 to 3 inches of soil and roots.  It is easy to figure the number of plugs that you will need for your lawn.  You will need 1 plug for every square foot you want covered.  If you are looking at an area of 10 feet by 10 feet (which is 100 square feet), then you will need 100 plugs.  The original zoysia grass is the Amazoy Zoysia Grass.

Many people want their lawn to fill in quicker and if that is something you would like, then plant a plug every 6 inches (which would double the number of plugs you will need).

So….zoysia grass florida zoysia grass plugs

The number of plugs you will need for 1,000 square feet are:

  • Plug spacing of 6 inches apart:  4,000 plugs
  • Plug spacing of 8 inches apart: 2,250 plugs
  • Plug spacing of 12 inches apart: 1,000 plugs

You can buy a tool from the grower called a “plugger” that is specially designed to remove the right amount of soil from the ground and create a small hole for your zoysia grass plugs that you are planting.

Once you place your order, you should receive your plugs within a few days.  You should plant the plugs in your lawn shortly after you receive them.  Once you have planted the zoysia grass plugs, you will need to keep them moist for the first two to three weeks in order to prevent the roots from drying out.

You should expect two complete growing seasons to have complete coverage of your lawn.

You will not need to mow your lawn as frequently (at least half the mowing that you have now), but you need to make sure that you cut no more than 1/3 of the grass off with each mow.

Your lawn will be lush and dark green color during the warm seasons and it is extremely dought tolerant.  During the winter season, the grass is brown but comes back to life (and green) in the spring.

Georgia — Planted in clay soil

“I planted Zoysia Farms plugs last spring. I did half my backyard as a test. The plugs arrived looking dormant, just as I was told to expect. I got them into the ground within the week. Planted in North Georgia red clay dirt with no topsoil or fertilizer. I watered them well, and they greened up in no time. As of this spring they are already spreading and choking out the weeds and the old fescue (although the company tells you to allow two to three years for them to completely cover). I have ordered more plugs to finish the other half of the yard. My entire back yard will be covered in low maintenance, hardy grass for under $100!” –M.M.
